Since you are here, you want to achieve your goals. Life is a constant struggle of getting somewhere, from here to there, from Point A to point B.
In school, we want good grades, friends, popularity, and then, a good college. In college, similar dreams and goals, except now we want to get a good job. Once we get a job, we want to find the love of our life. Meanwhile, we dream of being fit, of being healthy, of improving ourselves, of becoming more confident, happier, healthier, etc.
What if I told you a hack that will reduce the time it takes you to get from where you are right now, to where you want to be in the future? What if you could achieve your goals and become the dream version of you in 5 months instead of 5 years?
And what if you could become her TODAY?
It is possible. Just start embodying who she is, right now.
“Start what? What are you saying?”
At this point my audacity to make it sound so easy might have frustrated you, but hear me out–and continue reading.
Don’t have time right now? Save it for later!
How to Achieve Your Goals by Changing Your Identity
1. Clarity
The first step to achieve your goals or dreams is clarity. You have to know WHAT you want. So, take some time to figure out who your ideal version of YOU is. What does she do? What has she achieved?
If you are still stuck, think about the following:
- Imagine if you could ask for ANYTHING in the world, and the answer would be yes. What would you ask for?
- If money, responsibilities, and time were not an issue, what would you want?
- What lights you up?
- What do you dream of?
2. Envision
Create that dream person. Give her a name.
What does she look like? What does she act like? What are her habits? What time does she sleep? How much water does she drink?
Create the person you want to be, the person who is living your dream life.
3. Identify
Identify what traits this girl has. Get closer on a few habits, a few characteristics, and traits she has. Make a list.
Here are a few to get you started:
Confident, grateful, kind, hopeful, positive, optimistic, energetic, upbeat, bold, decisive, generous…
Cares for her body, optimizes her time, gets things done, etc.
4. Embody
Now comes the FUN part. You can collapse time between where you are right now (Point A) and where you want to be (Point B) by beginning to change yourself at the IDENTITY level.
Robert Dilts Pyramid of Logical Levels
Amazing books by Robert Dilts – the pioneer of NLP
Instead of Have-Do-Be change your approach to Be-Do-Have.
If you think like this:
“When I have a good body, I will wear cute clothes, and be confident”
“When I get a job, I will wake up early, and be disciplined”
“When I make enough money, I will travel, and be happy”
Change your identity and show up with confidence today. How will that change?
How can you be disciplined today?
What if you were happy TODAY?
Embody WHO your ideal version is today. Become her.
Baby steps are key. Choose 1 task that you will do that she does and one characteristic of her. It could be confidence or channeling deep wisdom or being grateful for everything she has accomplished (in the future).
5. Results
What happens when you choose to BE the version of you that you want to be? Your goals are more sustainable and your subconscious gets to work. And your subconscious is MUCH more powerful than your conscious mind.
So when you have a goal – like going to the gym – you store that in your conscious mind. You lay your clothes next to you, have your shoes ready, your playlist picked out, everything.
And that will work. For a few days. Until your conscious mind gets tired of making that decision everyday – a decision that is CONTRARY to your identity.
Now imagine you are an athlete. You have been waking up at 4 or 5 am every single morning since you were 6 years old to train.
Would it be hard for you to wake up today?
No. Because that’s who you are.
And that is the magic of altering yourself at the IDENTITY level, rather than at your habits/environmental level.
And that will collapse the time it takes you to go from Point A to Point B. As you become the person you wanted to BE (let’s say Beyonce), you will automatically DO the things Beyonce does, and as a result HAVE the things she does.
And this time it won’t be a conscious effort (which takes habits, a lot of discipline, and a whole lot of tedious effort).
Imagine waking up and thinking “I am a gym junkie”. If you tell that to yourself enough, your subconscious will adopt that identity and with each passing day, waking up an hour earlier to work out will be much easier.
Imagine thinking “I am the CEO of a successful business”. You will start to live like that woman. Your subconscious will help you be more confident, make better decisions, think on your feet, and feel more empowered. And as a result, you will end up having success faster.
So if you want to be someone who is confident in the future, try to invoke that confidence right now. If you want to be happy in the future, after you achieve your goals, then embody that happiness right now. And that will become your normal state of mind.
